The media has engaged in numerous discussions about the subject, yet the Dallas Cowboys and their star quarterback have not yet initiated talks on a potential new contract.
According to NFL Network’s Jane Slater, as of Wednesday, no discussions have taken place whatsoever between Dak Prescott and the Cowboys regarding a potential contract extension.
However, Slater mentioned that the situation is not likely to cause worry and expressed her expectation that an agreement may be reached by the time August approaches.
Prescott is approaching the end of his existing contract and is set to enter the last season of the deal, with a significant salary cap hit of $59.4 million allocated for the Dallas Cowboys’ financial records in 2024. That single number is a strong indicator that a new agreement should be negotiated in order to reduce the impact on Dallas’ salary cap.
According to Slater, despite the lack of ongoing negotiations at this time, it is to be expected that there will be some exchange of views and information through various media outlets.
During an interview with journalists at the NFL Scouting Combine, Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys, expressed his belief that Prescott has the potential to elevate his performance, suggesting that he is capable of playing at a higher level than he currently is. Moreover, he confidently stated that he is not worried about the possibility of this season being Prescott’s last with the team.
During the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala held in Dallas on Monday, Prescott appeared visibly happy and expressed his optimism by stating confidently that he believes a new contract will be successfully negotiated. He further emphasized the significance of this agreement for the benefit of the team and mentioned the importance of considering the numerical aspects involved.
The Cowboys are facing the challenge of managing free agency starting next week, in addition to the task of securing long-term contracts for wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons. It is anticipated that Dallas will allow running backs Tony Pollard and Rico Dowdle to become free agents, thereby depleting the depth of the running back position on the team. According to Slater, the Cowboys have expressed interest in Texas running back Jonathan Brooks and are considering the possibility of recruiting a more experienced running back to add to their roster.
As a result, the Cowboys will have to carefully manage a delicate situation as there will be numerous headlines focusing on Prescott’s circumstances.
And it seems that, based on the current situation with Prescott, they have not even begun to initiate the process.
